Question 1

Why is it called Friday Night Lights?

Accepted Answer

Saturdays belong to college football and Sundays to the NFL, so Friday night under the stadium lights became the traditional slot for high schools. The phrase was cemented by Buzz Bissinger's 1990 book, the 2004 feature film, and the 2006-2011 NBC series, all built around the ritual of a town gathering at the field on a Friday night.

Question 2

How is Texas high school football organized?

Accepted Answer

The University Interscholastic League (UIL) sorts public schools into six classifications, 1A through 6A, by enrollment. Alignments are redrawn every two years, and teams play district schedules that feed a single-elimination playoff bracket ending in a state championship. The largest classes are split into divisions so schools compete against similarly sized programs.

Question 3

When does the Texas high school football season run?

Accepted Answer

The regular season traditionally opens in late August and runs into early November, followed by several weeks of playoffs. The state championship games are held in December.

Question 4

What is six-man football?

Accepted Answer

The smallest 1A schools play six-man football, a faster, higher-scoring variation on a shorter, narrower field where nearly every player is eligible to catch a pass. It keeps the Friday-night tradition alive in the most rural corners of Texas.

Question 5

Was the Friday Night Lights TV show filmed in Austin?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Though set in the fictional town of Dillon, both the 2004 film and the NBC series were shot across Austin and Central Texas, using real local stadiums, schools and neighborhoods in and around Pflugerville, Del Valle, Hutto, Manor and Round Rock.
